Shopping centres and retail

Standby generators for shopping centres and stores that keep lighting, lifts, refrigeration and safety systems running during power cuts, for sale or rental with scheduled and emergency maintenance.

Alemtiaz generator outside a shopping centre

Alemtiaz Kuwaiti for Logistic and Oil & Gas Services Co. supplies new and used diesel generators to shopping centres and stores in Kuwait, as standby power with a transfer switch or as temporary power during maintenance and expansion works, for sale or rental, with installation within 24 hours, scheduled maintenance contracts and emergency maintenance within 24 hours.

Typically 100 to 250 kVA or more for a centre, and less for single stores, depending on the loads that must keep running during an outage.

Why does a shopping centre need a standby generator?

When the power fails in a shopping centre, lifts and escalators stop with visitors on them, walkways and car parks go dark, and restaurant fridges, food stores, tills and security cameras stop working. The first minutes are the most critical for visitor safety and for chilled stock, which is why shopping centres and large stores rely on a standby generator that restores the essential loads within seconds and protects the centre’s reputation with visitors and tenants.

Which loads does the standby generator run?

A standby generator does not usually need to run the whole centre with full air conditioning. It runs the loads that must not stop. The table below shows typical values as a guide:

Load Typical capacity
Safety systems, cameras and tills 10 to 30 kVA
Emergency, walkway and car park lighting 20 to 60 kVA
Restaurant and food store refrigeration 30 to 100 kVA
Lifts and escalators 40 to 120 kVA
Partial cooling for the main walkways 100 to 250 kVA or more

These are typical values only. We set the exact capacity after a site survey and a calculation of the loads that must keep running during an outage, and single stores usually need far less.

How does the generator work with a transfer switch?

The standby generator connects to the main board through a transfer switch. When mains power fails, the generator starts and takes over the load, and when mains power returns the load goes back to the grid. We supply transfer switches, cables and wiring as part of the installation, and we test the changeover with the centre’s team before handover so everyone knows what happens at the moment of an outage.

How does a standby generator stay ready?

A standby generator runs only a few hours a year, yet it must start first time when it is needed. We therefore offer scheduled maintenance contracts that include load testing and checks on batteries, fuel and filters, plus emergency maintenance within 24 hours. Details are on the generator maintenance page.
